The International Council for Advertising Self-Regulation (ICAS) organizes Global Awards for Effective Advertising Self-Regulation since 2019. These awards, open to all ICAS members, aim to promote best practices among Self-Regulatory Organizations (SROs) worldwide by highlighting successful initiatives contributing to more ethical standards in advertising.
Staring in 2023, the ICAS Global Awards consist in the following Awards:
Excellence Award – for the best charter commitment initiative: The objective of this Award Category is to reward outstanding SRO initiatives that have strengthened the national SR system or contributed to more ethical standards regarding one or several of the ten ICAS Charter commitments.
Inspiration Award – for the best charter commitment initiative of SROs with limited resources: The objective of this award category is to reward SROs with an annual income of less than 750.000EUR, which have developed successful initiatives that have strengthened their national SR system, the SRO, or advanced ad self-regulation regarding one or several of the ten ICAS Charter Commitments.
Innovation Award: The objective of this award category is to highlight SR initiatives that are original and innovative. Examples could be technological innovations, new research and thought leadership initiatives or innovative SRO services that benefit the development of advertising self-regulation.
Sustainability Award: The objective of this award category is to highlight initiatives that foster a trustworthy marketing environment and consumer trust when it comes to green claims and sustainability, contributing thus to marketing efforts to address climate change.
Submissions for the Awards are assessed by an independent Jury composed of the following members:

Jeffrey A, Greenbaum, Chairman of the Global Advertising Lawyers Alliance, Managing Partner of Frankfurt Kurnit
Jeff is the Managing Partner of U.S.-based law firm Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz and is a partner in the firm’s Advertising, Marketing & Public Relations Group. He also serves as the Chairman of the Global Advertising Lawyers Alliance and as the Chair of the International Advertising Association’s Public Policy Council.
Best Lawyers in America has twice named him “Advertising Lawyer of the Year” for the New York metro-area.
Onie Chu, Executive Director, Hong Kong 4As
Onie Chu is the Executive Director of The Association of Advertising Agencies of Hong Kong, popularly known as the HK4As. As a marketing and PR veteran with more than 3 decades of experience gained in-house, and with global and local agencies in Hong Kong, APAC and formerly China, Onie returned to herhometown to lead the industry association in 2018. Her mandate was to work closely with the board to anchor HK4As’ role amid an era of constantly-changing and tech-driven advertising. Albeit the added uncertainty and unprecedented challenges impacted all in the past few years, Onie holds on to her firm belief in creativity and communications. She pays high emphasis on interacting with the industry and promoting cross-generational conversations amongst practitioners. A strong advocate in creating for good, Onie is determined to keep looking ahead and paving the way forward for tomorrow’s generation.
Paula Fernandez Pfizenmaier, Legal Central Sr Manager – Propiedad Intelectual, Mercado Libre
Paula is an experienced intellectual property and advertising attorney with more than 15 years of experience advising companies on intellectual property matters, including management of IP portfolios and various other matters related to advertising and legal marketing. Paula is currently the head of intellectual property at Mercado Libre (the largest online commerce and payments ecosystem in Latin America).
Paula was elected Regional President for the Americas for the period 2021-2023. She is currently a member of the Intellectual Property Commission of the Argentine Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Global Advisory Council of INTA (International Trademark Association), and actively participates in many other regional and global IP associations. She obtained her law degree in 2002 and completed several postgraduate courses. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars on IP and legal advertising topics (both in Argentina and abroad) and regularly publishes articles in specialized publications.
Alexander Gligorijevic, Public Affairs & Advocacy, Campaign Unit Project Manager, Ingka Group (IKEA)
Alexander is the acting Manager of the Campaign Unit in INGKA’s (IKEA) Global Public Affairs Team, based in Malmö, Sweden. Alex works on INKGA’s climate engagement and drives an innovation initiative around purpose driven campaigning. Before joining INKGA, IKEA’s largest retailer, operating more than 390 IKEA stores in 31 countries, he was responsible for Public Relations of IKEA Switzerland during four years. He joined the home furnishing retailer after more than a decade of consulting in the field of PR and Marketing Communication with various agencies in Switzerland.
Alexander was a guest lecturer at the university of Applied Sciences in Zürich during several years, speaking about Social Media Strategy and Content Planning. Alexander spends a lot of time with his family outdoors, discovering the beautiful Swedish countryside.
Katie Goldstein, Business Affairs Lead and Global Head of KidAware, SuperAwesome
Katie Goldstein currently serves as the Business Affairs Lead at SuperAwesome. As Business Affairs Lead, she advises internal production and technology teams on creating innovative solutions to clients’ regulatory needs, whilst helping product teams embed privacy and advertising standards in SuperAwesome’s products. She helps lead outreach efforts to promote appropriate standards for digital advertising to children around the world. She also oversees SuperAwesome’s training program for clients and publishers to educate them on kids safety and compliance. Prior to joining SuperAwesome, Katie was senior counsel at the Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU).
Joel E. Nettey, Immediate-Past World President & Chairman, International Advertising Association (IAA)
Joel is the Immediate Past World President and Chairman of the International Advertising Association (IAA), the world’s most influential network of marketing and marketing communications professionals. He is the first African (and indeed black person) to have risen to this position. He is a savvy and well-acclaimed Management, Marketing and Marketing Communications expert and the Founder and Chief Executive of The Ninani Group, a group of Marketing Communications Specialist Companies in Ghana (West Africa).
A thoroughbred marketing communications professional, he has also been Chief Executive of various multinational marketing communications agency affiliates in Ghana including DDB, Saatchi & Saatchi and Publicis.
In 2021, Joel achieved the much-acclaimed global recognition of being one of the top hundred “Most Influential People of African Descent” in the Creative Edition of the MIPAD Awards (www.mipad.org).
Additionally to the Award categories mentioned above, a fifth award category has been introduced, the ICAS Special Recognition Award. This recognition is dedicated to SROs that have either delivered outstanding performance or have shown resilience or demonstrated exemplary commitment to advertising self-regulation by supporting regional initiatives or helped other SROs thrive. For this award, SROs cannot submit own initiatives, but can only be nominated by other ICAS members. The judging will take place by designated Executive Committee members and is thus an ICAS Executive Committee Award.
The Global ICAS Awards have been launched in November 2022 and the winners were announced at the Global ICAS Ceremony in April 2023, in Istanbul, Turkey, during the ICAS Annual Meetings.
